Ohakune just hasn’t got it (stress)

Ohakune is a great place for a holiday because of the many activities and adventures here, but it’s great for a break from the city for what it hasn’t got.

  • Ohakune in SnowNo crowds. City living it ’aint – Ohakune has only 1400 people in a town of one of the largest land-area districts in the country – the Ruapehu District. Ohakune is growing as a summer destination, but there is so much room that there is no danger of having to deal with the summer holiday crowds of the beach resorts.

  • No traffic lights. Ohakune doesn’t have one single traffic light to turn red and tell you that you can’t go when you want.

  • No motorways. With so few people there’s no need for motorways, just patience when you meet the ocassional mob of sheep on the road.

  • Steam n SnowNo traffic jams. The most likely traffic hazard is being stuck behind a slow-moving tractor, or having to drive around two blokes stopped in the street to discuss the day’s best fishing spot. But relax, you’re on holiday – enjoy the scenery.

  • No rush hour. You’re on holiday anyway, but even the locals don’t have to worry about rush hour – work’s probably only 30 seconds’ drive away or maybe a 10-minute drive in the country.

  • No queues. Well, hardly any. You might have to wait a bit at the supermarket check-out but that gives you a chance to chat with the locals – find out where that good fishing spot is.

  • No bookings. Usually in summer, there’s no need to book into a restaurant and, unless they’ve got a private function, you can stroll the streets to check out where you want to dine. Or check out the Dining Guide.

  • No worries. Just kick back and relax, listen to that mountain stream and the birds and wonder at how peaceful and quiet the world can be away from the city. FOOTNOTE: Just because you haven’t got the city traffic hold-ups, please don’t speed. There’s plenty of Ohakune time!
